Saint Alfred — King of Wessex

In 878, Alfred had nearly lost everything. His kingdom had been overrun, his forces scattered, and the survival of Christian Wessex hung in the balance. Driven into the marshes of Athelney by the Great Heathen Army, the king who had once commanded a kingdom was reduced to hiding with a small band of loyal men.

Alfred was not merely a warrior or king. He was a deeply pious Christian whose faith shaped his understanding of duty, suffering, kingship, and victory. In the darkness of Athelney, when earthly hope appeared exhausted, Alfred turned again to Christ. There, in hardship and humiliation, he was strengthened in faith and renewed in conviction. From that place of dependence upon God came the resolve to rise, gather his people, and confront the pagan army threatening to extinguish Christian rule in Wessex.

Alfred emerged from the marshes, rallied the men of Wessex, and defeated Guthrum at the Battle of Edington. His victory protected his people from further conquest, secured the survival of Christian Wessex, and preserved the last unconquered Anglo-Saxon kingdom against pagan domination.

The artwork pairs Alfred’s hour of trial with the promise of Isaiah 43:2:

“Through the waters, I will be with you. Through the fire, you will not be burned.”

The image of Christ standing before the kneeling Alfred depicts the heart of the story: when Alfred had been brought to the end of his own strength, Christ was with him, sustaining him through trial and restoring in him the courage to carry out the duty set before him.

Christian courage is not the belief that hardship will never come. It is the conviction that Christ is present within it—that the waters may still be crossed and the fire endured, but neither suffering nor defeat has the final word.

Alfred is depicted as he was: a warrior king, but also a man kneeling before a greater King. The sword at his side represents the earthly responsibility entrusted to him. His posture acknowledges that strength, authority, endurance, and victory come ultimately from God.

The front bears his name and royal title. The Chi-Rho on the sleeve represents Christ—the source of Alfred’s strength and the One who sustained him when his kingdom, his people, and his cause appeared lost. The back tells the story of trial, faith, divine presence, and deliverance.
